Welcome to the PodCheat project

PodCheat is an iPod copier/renamer, which allows you to select the songs you would like to copy out of your iPod, where you would like to copy them to, and what naming mask and directory structure to use while saving them. It's meant to be as compact as possible, and require nothing but itself, so it can sit in the root of your iPod and be ready to go to work for you at the click of a button.

Why?

Because I needed it myself. I often found myself wanting to grab a song out of my iPod, either just to play to someone on the computer, or to copy locally to use. But iPod jumbles up the song names, to make this harder to do! This meant opening Windows Search and searching inside the file, so that the search will look at file tags. This, too, took forever, because iPods store the same album in many different directories. Read more...

How does it work?

PodCheat opens the iTunesLib file. This is the file that iTunes and all its replacements write to when they copy a file onto your iPod. The file has all the information about the song, and the jumbled name and directory it's saved at. This allows PodCheat to locate the file you wanted, and know exactly where it's at on the iPod so it can copy it out easily. Read more...

Will it hurt my iPod?

No, it won't. PodCheat will only ever open your iPod's iTunesLib as read only. It will only ever copy files out of your iPod. It won't write anything to the iTunesLib file or the iPod's control directory.
